Jim Millspaugh of Clydes Feed and Animal Center in Hamburg, NY
At Better Animals, we like to focus on the wonderful accomplishments of our Show Chow and Honor customers. It's exciting to receive all of the pictures, notes, and emails from people notifying us of their success! We're also incredibly proud to be able to showcase all of our winners on this website!
With all of the success stories that we see, it might seem like winning at shows is an easy goal to achieve. But that couldn't be further from the truth! As many of you may know, raising a champion animal takes more than just a lot of time, skill, and patience - it also takes help from a number of different people.
We wanted to take a closer look at those behind-the-scenes people who are often the ones who help our customers get started on their journey to the winner's circle! To be specific, Better Animals decided it was important to take a little time out to discuss some very significant people worth mentioning - our dealers. This month we were lucky to have the opportunity to speak with Jim Millspaugh, a Better Animals dealer at Clyde's Feeds in Hamburg, New York. Jim gave us some great insight on how keeping an enthusiastic outlook on showing animals can give you the winning edge!
Better Animals: Hi, Jim. Thanks for giving us the chance to interview you today! To get a little background, does your store sell Honor®, Show Chow®, or both?
Jim Millspaugh: No problem! I'm happy to answer your questions. Our store sells both brands of feed, and we've seen a great deal of success from each one.
BA: That's great to hear! So, with all of the different feeds and incentive programs out there, why do you choose to promote not only Show Chow® and Honor® feeds, but also the Show Chow® Feed Rewards, Show Chow® Top Performer, and Honor RollTM Awards programs?
JM: I think it's important to realize that Show Chow® and Honor® are both feeds that are geared mainly towards the kids and a more 'youthful' market. On the other hand, these are reliable brands, so the parents see it beneficial to buy them. So, there's something for both the kids and parents!
BA: From looking at all of the Show Chow® Feed Rewards, Show Chow® Top Performer, and Honor RollTM Awards applications we receive on a daily basis, I've noticed many of them are sent in by Clyde's Feeds customers! Why do you suppose there are so many show animal enthusiasts in your area?
JM: We're lucky to have the second largest county fair in the country - it's called America's Fair (which can also be known as the Erie County Fair). This year, there were 1,009,122 attendees! This fair's success has generated a lot of interest in showing animals in our area. Around here, showing animals at the county level is much more competitive than at the state level. A lot of kids have the opportunity to show, which also leads to more winners in our area!
BA: What are some specific results you've seen from your customers who feed Show Chow® and/or Honor®?
JM: From the Honor® standpoint, I've noticed that this brand of feed has had a great deal of success in growing baby pigs. It raises pigs to their genetic potential without making them too muscle-bound. Our customers notice that it's a sound feed that's not extreme. As for Show Chow®, I would have to say that when raising beef cattle, it is superior to any type of feed out there. Other brands just don't come close!
BA: You speak very highly of both brands! Since the America's Fair just wrapped up, how did your Show Chow and Honor customers do?
JM: I?m proud to say that our kids won in every animal category at the fair! If you don't mind, I?d like to mention these kids' names, since it's such a great accomplishment!
BA: Sure, go right ahead!
